Celtic Cross

Contemporary carved crosses almost invariably signify a burial place, yet the early free-standing or high crosses were not erected for this purpose. The majority were positioned as meeting places, often within a Celtic monastic settlement, and were carved for the sheer enjoyment of creating beauty, or 'to the glory of God' as well as biblical scenes. Many have knot work patterns, spirals, mythical beasts and raised bosses, the latter said by some to symbolize the sun, worshipped by the early Celts. Madonna Litta.

Madonna LittaMadonna and Child (Madonna Litta), by Leonardo da Vinci 1452-1519. This Madonna and Child was probably painted in Milan, where the artist moved in 1482. The Madonna's sublime, tender gaze as she looks at her son, and the tranquility of the distant mountainous landscape, reflect humanist dreams of Ideal Man and a Harmonious Life. At once profound and noble, the painting reveals great beauty in its coloring and composition. The painting came to The State Hermitage Museum in 1865 from the collection of Count Antonio Litta in Milan. A preparatory drawing for the Madonna's head is in the Louver, Paris.

National Fire Prevention Month.

National Fire Protection Month

Wes (heavenbound) Dunbar a Contributing Editor of T.H.E. is a CL of Heartland/Farm and Pines. Like many CL's he also has a "real" job. Wes is a professional firefighter of twenty years. In honor of he and the other men and women who are fire fighters, please let us reflect upon October as National Fire Prevention Month. Wes has presented an outstanding article in T.H.E. this month and we urge you to visit, learn, spread the word.

We would certainly be remiss, due to our long standing association with the Boy Scouts of America, if we did not also call attention to the Fire Safety Merit Badge, which was formally known as Foremanship until the name change in 1995.

Gadzillion Award

By education our young people in fire safety we can make our homes, schools, and our nation a safer place in which to live.

Lindisfarne Manuscript.

Lindisfarne Gospel Page

The manuscript was executed in the Monastery of Lindisfarne, which was situated on Holy Island, just off the coast of Northumberland. It is probably
connected with the Translation of St Cuthbert, which took place on 20 March 698. Almost everything that it is known concerning the origin of the manuscript is derived from a note in Anglo-Saxon inserted, probably between 950 and 970, by a priest named Aldred (afterwards Provost of Chester-le-Street), who also inserted an Anglo-Saxon gloss, or word-for-word translation, in the spaces between the lines of the Latin text.

Many more mysteries await your visitation in your quest for "Founding."

Crop Circles.

Crop Circles

The phenomenon of crop circles as defined by Robert Carroll (1994) was first reported in 1946 and became a media event in the late 1980's. The origin of the completely flat circles in fields of crops, however remains a mystery. These circles have been reported from a diverse number of countries, Australia, Italy, United States, Norway, Canada and especially England where the main focus of the phenomenon occurs. These circles of swirled flattened crops (the stalks are not broken, only bent flat) appear mysteriously overnight, and may be single, double or triple circles, and may be intersected by straight lines.

Explanations for this phenomena abound, from UFOs, hoaxes, and the "Plasma Vortex Theory". None of these explanations seems to fully explain why and how they are created, as some are very geometrically intricate. Since 1992, the subject has received little media attention, due to two men claiming responsibility for hoaxing approximately 250 circles. However this does not account for the many others that have been created in England and all around the world. It is indeed an unexplained phenomena. Many more mysteries are revealed during your visit, yet most are simple truths, which a child may understand and accept with out equivocation.

Nancy Monaghan.

The Druid Stone Book CoverThe child in us revels in a good "mystery," grows excited as the cover is opened, and the pages leap to life with the excitement of an expertly written novel. The Druid Stone, by Nancy Monaghan will probably be a best seller.

When we sought to write an original Faerie Story which would introduce our Lancasters Laughing Place three years ago, we turned to school teacher whose writing and editing skills were highly recommended - Nancy Monaghan. We profoundly thank her for help and guidance and most of all for being a very dear friend.

These and many other mysteries await you as you visit our site. Enjoy!

The Spider Award.

The Spider Award - Top Ten PositionTo achieve a top ten position by a major search engine like Alta Vista requires perspiration, determination and some good old fashioned luck. J. K. Bowman's The Spider Award recognizes the achievement, although it may be short lived. Please visit the wonderful friends within our web site, who have made this award possible. For they have taught, and taught well. Please listen to their voices. Some are no longer on mother earth, yet they still influence our lives and those of our children. (I have arachnophobia).

Joan of Arc.

Joan of Arc at the Coronation of Charles VII in Reims Cathedral by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres , Reims, FranceJoan of Arc, by Thomas De Quincey was among the early stories that my parents read to me from Journeys Through Bookland before being able to read for myself. Her story has been reread many times, because the girl of Lorraine was a true inspiration. What is to be thought of her? A poor shepherd girl from the hills and forests of Lorraine in France - like the Hebrew shepherd boy from the hills and forests of Judea - rose suddenly out of the quiet, out of the safety, out of the religious inspiration, rooted in deep pastoral solitudes, to a station in the van of armies, and to the more perilous station at the right hand of kings? Enter our world and discover others who have inspired and lent courage - like Bernie Howe and Virginia Sparks..
