Autism is a condition which is simply put - inward and contained. ( not by design). Behavior results in the inability to communicate or relate to other persons, also called "infantile autism." When communication is achieved music, a familiar object, or other sounds usually initiate the communication. This author has often wondered or thought that God must be in communication on a consistent and daily basis with an autistic person. For parents, we pray that they too may ask this question and engage the help of the "Great Healer."
This story is dedicated to all of our special children. Especially Tabitha, in the hope that when parents read to their children, a smile will show that communication has been achieved.
Once upon a time in a land called Lallaleigh lived those who in later years would be called hippety hops. Their colors varied from white, black, brown, and various combinations. Peace and tranquility reined supreme in this magical land, where the sun never set on a frown, nor was there disharmony.
Into this land was born a very special little one who would be called Tabitha. In those later years she would unite the tribes of Lallaleigh with the humans who would dwell in middle earth, and the great spirits who called the upper earth their home.
Tabitha was noticed at an early age for her special qualities which set her apart from those of her family and the other residents of Lallaleigh. Her favorite past time from the age of six was flying kites. Not regular kites mind you whose tails were made from bright pieces of cloth, but carrots. For you see the Nodwick family land contained vast amounts of boron which produced an abundance of carrots and other vegetables which the family grew. No where else in Lallaleigh did vegetables, flowers, and other flora grow in such profusion. The other residents, while quite envious, were able to grow ample food for their own consumption.
On one particular March day when the wind was billowing and blowing with great gusto, Tabitha's "carrot kite" flew higher and further than ever before. Quite so high that it was just a wee speck in the blue sky. Suddenly the wind died down, the kite dipped behind some mountain peaks, and with a sudden burst of wind regained the kite began an upward assent only to waver to and fro. So Tabitha began the process of rewinding the cord and bringing her kite back to earth. Once safely in her hands, she noticed that several of the carrots were missing. "That was the reason for the to and fro movement," she thought!
Several
years had passed and the missing carrots event had repeated itself many times. Up went her kite again and eventually it reached the same spot over the mountain peaks. This time when dipping and
regaining altitude, the entire "tail of carrots" was missing. On the morrow Tabitha asked her mother to pack a lunch and give her permission to travel into the mountains. At first a little hesitant,
Nora finally agreed and her daughter began a trip which would change the course of history as we have been told in our written history of Western Civilization, except for some detail which is
contained in this story.
The distance to the mountain peaks was not quite so far as first thought and her destination was reached in a few hours. This would leave her plenty of time for exploring, a lunch, and return home before night fall. After all she had promised her mother not to be out after dark.
Tabitha started up the steep mountain pass trying to find a path which would provide safe walking. Suddenly a patch of green lush grass seemed to wind its way up the mountain. A path! The journey to the top was reached with ease by following the path and at the top was a hole. Not an ordinary hole, but one from which fowl smelling smoke flowed upward. She heard an unfamiliar sound from the hole and called hello. The echo of her greeting echoed through the hollow of the hole and bounced off the mountain peaks. A silence the a return hello. Did she hear someone or something answer her greeting?
"Who are you" she asked. "I am Bertha the Dragon," was the reply.
"What is a dragon" she asked. With that a smiling dragon's head popped out of the hole. Startled, Tabitha wanted to know what a dragon was doing hiding in a hole. Bertha replied "waiting for more carrots!"
Now Tabitha knew what had happened to her "carrot kite" tail over the years. During the course of their conversation, Tabitha learned that Bertha had been left on earth by her mother as an egg, had hatched, and one day while quite hungry spotted some carrots in the sky and quickly flew from the safety of her hole, ate some carrots and returned. And over the years had often wondered who was the friend who had provided such delightful carrots. Bertha also told Tabitha that her mother Morgona promised that a human would come to be her friend and that this friendship would change the course of history.
"How will our friendship change the course of history?" Tabitha asked
Bertha explained that humans would not accept the fact of dragons, but that Tabitha could reveal the reality of dragons with those who could communicate with her.
"But all humans can communicate with me" said Tabitha.
Bertha explained that when Tabitha returned from the mountain only special humans would be able to communicate with her. Bertha also explained to Tabitha that the Great Spirit or God would over the course of time give humans a gift. This gift would be called compassion, which would be the gift of gifts for in compassion is the understanding of the Trinity and an open mind which is receptive to the mind of God. By being receptive the mind of certain humans will also be a receptacle of God's wisdom and in his wisdom will communication with his special children be made possible.
Tabitha heard these words, understood and traveled down the lush green path toward her home. When she reached home, her mother asked about her journey.
Tabitha was silent.
But Tabitha would not always remain silent, for she will communicate to each of us through her glorious smile, shining eyes, and a heart of gold.
Listen! Do you hear her speaking to you?
