Do It Yourself Nursery Section

Nursery

Starting projects during tax season in the United States was something I could not do while working full time.  But now that I am retired (March 2006) taking a break from the computer and tax returns is a welcome change of pace.

Our second daughter is expecting April 30, 2007 and since she moved back home with all of her belongings, a tidy space was needed in the spare bedroom closet.

Nursery closed in spare bedroom

The spare bedroom closet is 63 inches wide and 26 inches deep. The original closet had the one rod to hang clothing and a shelf above the rod.

This configuration was built with two boxes and an open space in-between. The box at the left proved unsatisfactory so the panel on the right was cut and reinforced. Long clothing will hand in that area.

The middle section will have the two rods for regular clothing and the section to your right will have adjustable shelving. The cost is about $70.00 which is for two sheets of birch plywood, 1.5 inch wood rod and hardware. This cost is comparable to wire shelving but is much more sturdy.

Nursery Closet Finished

The picture to your left is the nursery closet finished with two coats of acrylic white enamel.  A roller suggested for polyurethane was used and the enamel when finished with the second coat and dried, looked and felt like it had been spray painted.

A lesson learned was in working with bowed or warped plywood.  I placed the warp outward from the shelving and had to place half inch by three-quarter inch strips so the shelves would fit snug against the sides.

The next time I will remember to place the bow or warp inward and then the shelves will take out the bow or warp without the need for strips.

Nursery Completed

The closet above is in the bedroom while the nursery you see in the picture to your right was once a screened in porch and is just off the bedroom.

The ceiling and carpet are a royal blue and the walls are painted with an acrylic white.

A friend of Caroline's who is an artist, painted the exquisite detail on the chest of drawers and the small wardrobe.  My wife adorned the sheer window panels with ribbon to compliment the decor.  Two butterflys were hung from the ceiling at the foot of the baby crib and the changing table.  A Harbor Breeze 44 inch Annalise fan was hung which was the finishing touch.  I must admit that the fan was my idea.  Hard not to be excited about a baby in our home after our children are grown and then return with children of their own.
