Starting to do a kitchen remodeling project before the youngest daughters wedding required adequate planning. Both in terms of finances and time required to complete the project.
So we opted to do our remodeling project in phases. Phase one required the minimal work with the maximum visual benefit, which also required the lowest expenditure.

This picture was taken after a suspended ceiling and range vent hood was removed. The area above the green paint was a suspended grid ceiling. The hole above the stove was where the range hood was located.
Typical of all remodeling jobs is the unexpected. Looking at the upper right above the stove, you may be able to see the copper gas line which was wrapped around the six inch stud wall. The bathroom is on the opposite side. This fact was concealed by the range hood. The opening in the plaster wall was to accommodate the range vent hood.
Surface Preparation
The old fashioned elbow grease was used to clean the walls and ceiling. Small areas were sprayed with diluted Krud Kutter and wiped with a damp sponge. After drying, all holes and cracks were filled and sanded level. Then another application of Krud Kutter for final cleaning.
Two coats of Kilz 2 latex were applied and finished with two coats of semi-gross enamel latex.

Two stock wall cabinets were purchased which filled the top to bottom of the range vent hood, leaving the recommended 25 inches between the bottom of the hood and the stove top.
We opted to purchase a GE Profile range hood because of the rated 470 cfm exhaust capacity, low noise and ease of installation.
The venting system allowed either for various methods of pipe installation and the rectangular one we choose was extended into the attic and then to the outside of our home. There was still enough room in the two stock wall cabinets to place everyday goods within easy reach.
GE low profile electronic ballast florescent lighting was placed under the cabinets and was a nice touch, according to my wife who also insisted in more ambient lighting, especially for her work areas.
