Why bother with disability issues?

When our Talking Hands Award was first established we received an e mail from someone in London, England. Over the course of the months which followed we kept in weekly contact. Not knowing that James was deaf - blind, I asked a stupid question - "Why can't you see our award in your browser?" What followed was not only enlightening, but informative and educational as well. We are in the process of making our entire site disability compliant (completed 3 April, 1999), not only because of provisions in the Disability and Access Act of 1996, but because James informs me that the average stay by a person at a web site who has a disability is almost one hour. Think with me for a moment. Why would some one care enough about a site to stay almost an hour? The answer is really simple - because when a site is finally found which can be "read" or "seen" by someone with a disability, this is really an exciting event and prompts an inward statement - "Someone really cares about me!" Heartland Community Leaders and others who care may be found at Cynthia Says.

P.S. Also "see" our "Reliable Authorities" section for yet another reason why your love and compassion should show in your web site creations by being disability compliant.
