Angels and Cherubim Among Clouds, Federico Zuccaro,
Circa 1566. "Federico Zuccaro ranks among the major painters of the late 1500s. He was a proponent of the Mannerist style, which formed a bridge between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He
trained in his older brothers studio, assisting Taddeo on important commissions. Between 1563 and 1565, Federico was in Venice and Florence, returning to Rome in 1566, the year of his brothers death.
He worked on the cupola frescoes of the Duomo in Florence, and became court painter to Philip II of Spain." (Source: The J. Paul Getty Museum Press Release)
Venus Consoling Cupid Stung by a Bee, Benjamin West. "West's theory of art and teaching was based on the study of the human figure as perfected in classical sculpture. Since Greek
sculpture was known primarily through Roman copies, West invariably advised artists traveling to Italy to go first to Rome as the center for the study of both antiquities and old masters. In Rome
West perceived a linkage between the figures in classical sculpture and American Indians, offering eyewitness testimony to the validity of the Enlightenment concept of the noble savage. Illumination
of his experience in Rome is provided by Joseph Wilcocks in his Roman Conversations. Each "conversation" involved visiting a site of historic significance or examining artifacts, reading the writings
of classical authors on the relevant events and personages from Roman History, and discussing the significance of this material." (Source: Benjamin West and the Use of Antiquity..
