Brown University's digital collection presents teaching of the life and deeds of one of the leading personalities of the Italian unification process Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), against the historical backdrop of 19th-century Europe.
This archive is a digital dynamic visualization of the library's Garibaldi panorama, which is based upon manuscript translations, allowing visitors to visually re-live Garibaldi's life and times by zooming in and out on specific scenes which are accompanied by manuscript, voiceover narrations in both Italian and English. Additional information can also re retrieved concerning the philological translation of manuscripts, the panorama as an artifact with historical significance as a popular representational media in 19th century Europe.
Pictorial newspapers and the age of the illustrator emerged in early 19th century and by the time of Garibaldi's flamboyant character burst upon the world stage along with unfolding events, the public was familiarized and informed about different cultures, societies and physical environments. Ordinary people began to be educated and on par with those who possessed more formal education and who were also world travelers.
For those such as myself, the Brown University exhibit provides mind pictures and adventure, unparallel in modern media. An age of enlightenment and imagination accompanied by publishing excellence, rather than the drudgery of lesser gifted writers and artists present in today's media. Therefore my nomination for your web site award.
