The Nature Conservancy is an old friend I first met in 1951when it was founded, while in middle school. Throughout my school years and into adult hood I have been very active in conservation efforts and have been gratified when gifts of land, talent and monetary funds have been made available to The Nature Conservancy, particularly in the United States but also throughout the whole of mother earth.

The Nature Conservancy seeks to address the significant biodiversity and threats to delicate ecosystems but one such effort at Grand Bay, Alabama is near where I live and is mentioned to give an example of the work of The Nature Conservancy which has worked with several other conservation groups, and resource agencies to protect the integrity and restore the natural communities at Grand Bay. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service established the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and the United States Department of Commerce and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources created the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve along the state line. The State of Alabama's Forever Wild Program has acquired 2500 acres as a nature preserve near Bayou La Batre.

I wanted to give the background above as an introduction to my nomination for your website award for Stories From The Heart of The Land which have been presented on public radio, trusting that you will find solace in listening to these heart rendering stories about nature and humankinds remarkable connection to mother earth.  Which in prolonged periods take us back to our roots and our compelling need for stewardship, which are not hindered by events which transfix us when watching television. Take some time out of your life to again be in oneness with nature.
