Going Down The Crooked Road-Presented 261017

Photographer Kyle Green, video journalist Seth Gitner and Ralph Berner, Jr traveled a 250 mile journey in Southwest Virginia. Their travels are a six part story which became Going Down a Crooked Road for The Roanoke Times.

The mountain music traditions and history of Southwest Virginia begins in Franklin county and includes stops at Ferrum, Floyd, Galax, Grayson, Cointwood and Hiltons. All along the Crooked Trail we find that what is in-between the eight stops, the architecture, food ways, occupations and the people are what is important. The eight stops are capsules in a living memory.  What is all along the trail are people, places and things which will continue to produce a living memory.

The soul of mountain music which empowered past and present generations of song writers and artists to produce mountain music will inspire many more future chapters in this rich American tradition.
