The obvious teaching element of the site is that of History. The site is an extensive research project that was intended to document the history of Marine Bombing Squadron Six-Thirteen (VMB-613) for future generations. The project was initiated in late-2004 when it was discovered that the historical information on the squadron available to the public was sparse–consisting of only a few paragraphs in a number of books and official records summarized on six 3X5-inch note cards. Those that have contributed to make this site successful in accomplishing its goal are: the National Archives; the Marine Corps Historical Branch; the University of Houston Libraries’ Special Collections staff; numerous squadron members, and; many interested individuals and friends throughout the world.
A second, and more important teaching element, is that of Brotherhood. The design, research, and compilation of this site is the work of a recently retired 46 year old Marine who wanted to honor his fellow Marines for their faithful and honorable service during the Second World War. Based on the common bond of brotherhood that exists between Marines of all ages, the webmaster has taken the time to speak with many of the squadron members, established personal friendships with many of them, and worked tirelessly to ensure that the story of their service is told in its entirety. These efforts have provided many of them with fond memories of camaraderie and their youth. For some it has even given them a new outlook on life in their "Golden Years." As summarized by the webmaster, “I can honestly say that the efforts involved with this website have been the highlight of my post-Marine Corps career. It has been an honor to work with and document the story of this distinguished group of gentlemen, my brother Marines.
