Delta Society-Presented 260128

Screen shot-Delta SocietyWhen asked to provide a laudation for the Delta Society, I could not help but reflect upon three of our Heatherway Kennel Shetland Sheepdogs who are still active in this wonderful program and started in the program at the Women's and Children's Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. For those who may be interested in the Delta Society program, how our three Shelties became involved may be of interest.  A handler and pet work as a unit, as is the case in any successful dog training.  An introduction for a new pet is through the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program administered by a certified AKC person, then might be followed with the more rigid standards of Therapy Dog International (TDI) and finally if all goes well, consideration of the Delta Therapy Animal Program and then association with Delta's Pet Partners Program.  Certification by Delta is internationally recognized as being the most rigid standard for Therapy Dogs.

Note: Individuals who want to register with our therapy animal program, Pet Partners do not need to go through the CGC and TDI before they train and register with the Delta Society. Second we do not do training of animals.  We provide training for the handler and evaluation of the handler and animal.  We register all types of domestic animals in our program including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, horses and many others.
